About the Edition

Kim Schoen’s edition “Stilvoll leben” (“Living in style”) shows a photograph of an oddity. The perfectly lit picture shows a book that isn’t really a book at all. The object is only pretending to be a book. It does so without any pages. The purpose of this book is not to serve literary pleasure, it functions instead as a piece of decor. Instead of a book, we see a mock-up of a book. A book sold by the meter intended to embellish the shelves of furniture stores. Ever since Schoen stumbled across these absurd objects, she has been fascinated by them. The artist has invested plenty of time and research in acquiring these "Buchattrappen." She found her manufacturer in Ostrach, Baden-Württemberg where Thomas Moser produces his content-free books. Schoen purchased a meter and received a random assortment of titles. Ever since, these odd objects have been accompanying the artist from studio to studio, from London to Los Angeles to Berlin. "They aren’t books, they’re pictures, meant to be looked at, as one looks at an image”, the artist says.

At some point, Schoen started to photograph these “book pictures”. Some can be immediately identified as mere book jackets due to kinks in the cardboard where one would normally find pages. “Stilvoll leben” (2018), however, is different! The mock-up is only revealed as such at second glance. And that is exactly what makes this piece so exciting. And—where does the mock book’s title come from? Kim Schoen has spent some time thinking about this question: Is there a hidden “I” in the production chain that made the decision to give a special, custom title to something that really isn’t anything at all?
